The book is as a result of discussions during the Conference on Best Practices and Approaches for the Protection of Community Land Rights in Kenya which was held in 2013.
Community Land Rights in Kenya are recognized in the Constitution of Kenya. However, the implementation of the Community Land Act is still underway. Dr. Odote noted that, in order to implement the Community Land legislation, it is important to understand community land rights.
The Speaker of the Senate, Ekwe Ethuro noted that, the book is going to be a pathway for legislators in understanding community land and see the need for fast-tracking the enactment of the Community Land Act.
The book discusses experiences from countries such as South Africa and Brazil, which can be used as guidelines in Kenya in implementing the Constitutional provisions on Community Land Rights. Not only does the book discuss research done internationally but also in certain local communities to draw insight in community land rights.
Prof. Patricia noted that, ‘it was time to dismantle knowledge cartels and disturb the status quo in academia. Through the creative commons we are able to saturate diverse forums and share knowledge not for commercial purpose but for the love of research.’
