The Disability Rights Project of the School of Law of the University of Nairobi has today, 30 June 2016, held a symposium on the HUMAN rights of persons with disabilities at the University’s Parklands Campus.

The theme of the symposium was: ‘Norms, Practice and Benefits: Realising the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Kenya and regionally.

The symposium brought together academics, practitioners and students to explore the character, prospects and challenges of realizing the rights of persons with disabilities since the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) was adopted in 2006. Presenters and participants explored the narratives and counter-narratives which implementation of the Convention and the Constitution of Kenya (2010) has generated.

Speakers at the symposium included Professor Charles Ngwena of the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria; Dr. Reginald Oduor of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, the University of Nairobi; and Elizabeth Kamundia, a doctoral candidate at the University of Pretoria.

Over 200 people attended the symposium, including the Dean of the School of Law, Professor Patricia Kameri-Mbote.
