Overview
PHILOSOPHY
The philosophy of this programme is anchored on learner’s preparation to participate in environmental solutions through the development and design of environmental policies that address social, economic and environmental challenges.
RATIONALE
Environmental degradation is one of the biggest challenges in the 21st century. In response, individuals, civil societies, corporate organisations, academia and governments around the world have been pursuing environmental sustainability as a policy goal. This has been supported by an array of new policies ranging from international agreements, national strategies, environmental laws and local plans. These have culminated with the adoption of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015.
Despite these efforts, decades of scientific monitoring indicate that the world is no closer to environmental sustainability. There is therefore an increased need for innovation in the design and implementation of environmental policies. However, there is insufficient expertise to meet these needs, especially in the African continent. This programme is therefore expected to innovatively enhance multidisciplinary grounding to generate knowledge to support practice in environmental policy while deepening research capacity and competencies in the discipline.
The curriculum was arrived at during consultative meetings where CASELAP with various stakeholders from both the public and private sector, held meetings and seminars, to identify training gaps and industry opportunities.
The goal of this Programme is to provide the learner with advanced and multidisciplinary skills and attitudes to enhance research and scholarship in environmental policy practice.
The objectives of this program are:
- To evelop exemplary scholarship, research competencies and analytical skills in environmental policy;
- To provide advanced training that will build and strengthen individual capacity to undertake advanced research on environmental policy issues and design appropriate intervention strategies;
- To impart advanced knowledge and skills to mainstream environmental considerations into development policies, programmes and plans to promote sustainable development;
- To prepare a student to undertake advanced research and submit a PhD thesis; and
- To prepare a student to teach in institutions of higher learning and conduct research in research institutions and in the private sector
The Goal of the Programme
The goal of this Programme is to provide the learner with advanced and multidisciplinary skills and attitudes to enhance research and scholarship in environmental policy practice.

6.1 Written Examination
6.1.1 The common regulations governing taught PhD University examinations shall apply.
6.1.2 A student shall take written examinations at the end of each semester.
6.1.3 The end of semester examinations shall constitute 50% of total course marks whereas continuous assessments account for 50%.
6.1.4 Continuous assessments shall consist of class presentations, seminar papers and written assignments.
6.1.5 Each taught course shall be examined through a three (3) hour written examination paper at the end of the semester in which it is taken.
6.1.6 The pass mark for each course shall be 50%.
6.1.7 A student who fails in more than two course units may, on recommendation of the CASELAP Board of Examiners, be discontinued by Senate.
6.1.7 A student who fails to pass in any course unit shall be allowed to sit for one supplementary examination in the unit within one semester.
6.1.8 A student who fails to satisfy the examiners in the second supplementary examination shall, on recommendation of the CASELAP Board of Examiners and approval by Senate be discontinued.
6.1.9 A pass obtained in the supplementary examination shall be recorded as 50%.
6.1.10 A student who fails in the supplementary or fails to complete the course work in the prescribed time shall, on recommendation of the CASELAP Board of Examiners and approval of the Senate, be discontinued.
6.2 Thesis Examination
6.2.1 A student shall be assigned at least two supervisors when conducting research to write a thesis.
6.2.2 A student shall be required to successfully present two seminars on their research work as arranged by CASELAP before submitting athesis for examination.
6.2.3 A student shall be required to consult with the supervisors at least once every three months and to submit a written progress report to the Director, CASELAP through the supervisors and the chair of CASELAP’s Academic Programmes Committee with a copy to the Director, Board of Postgraduate Studies in a prescribed format.
6.2.4 A student shall write and submit for examination a thesis based on research carried out under supervision. The format of the thesis, and the examination of the student, shall be as prescribed in the common regulations for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Nairobi.
6.2.5 A student shall make an oral defence of the thesis after examination by two internal examiners and one external examiner, in accordance with the common regulations governing PhD programmes of the University.
Structure
The Programme shall take not less than six (6) semesters and a maximum of fourteen (14) semesters.
The student shall be required to register for, undertake and be examined in six taught course units, all of which shall be core units on offer during the first and second semester.
Admission Requirements
The common regulations governing admission into taught PhD programmes in all Institutes, Faculties, Schools and Centres of the University of Nairobi shall apply.
The following shall be eligible for admission:
- A holder of a Master of Arts degree in Environmental Policy, Environmental Law or Environmental Diplomacy from the University of Nairobi or any other institution recognized by the Senate.
- A holder of a Masters Degree in Environmental Studies, Law, Humanities, Natural or Social Sciences or their equivalent from the University of Nairobi or any other institution recognized by the Senate.
- A holder of a doctoral degree in the above fields from any institution recognized by the Senate.
- Other qualifications that are acceptable to the Senate as equivalent to a Masters degree in relevant fields.
